INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

The Greek Orthodontic Review is published biannually in both Greek and English languages and accepts for publication original scientific works in the field of orthodontics (reviews, research papers, case presentations), interviews with renowned researchers and clinicians in orthodontics, book reviews, summaries of published works and dissertations, news related to products and contemporary developments in orthodontics, and letters to the editor. Works are accepted on the condition that they are original and have not been previously published or submitted for publication elsewhere.

The papers submitted to the Greek Orthodontic Review must follow the following guidelines. These guidelines are in accordance with the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals," as defined by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors and can be found at www.icmje.org.

The papers are subject to review by two reviewers and the editorial committee. The publishers retain all rights of the scientific works once they are accepted for publication by the editorial committee. Upon submission of the work, all authors must sign the following statement:
The undersigned authors of the paper, [title of work], hereby grant all copyright rights to the Orthodontic Society of Greece in the event that the work is published. We declare that the work is original, is not under review in another journal, and has not been published previously."

Views and opinions presented in the articles of the Greek Orthodontic Review belong to the authors and not to the editorial committee or the Orthodontic Society of Greece. The Orthodontic Society of Greece does not guarantee the accuracy of the content of the articles and bears no responsibility for any errors or omissions.

FORMAT OF WORKS

Scientific works must be submitted either in Modern Greek (monotonic system) or English. The journal undertakes the translation from one language to the other. The editorial committee reserves the right to linguistically modify the text for the uniformity of the journal. Works must be typed double-spaced on one side of numbered A4 pages (21.0 x 29.7 cm). Submit the original in electronic form (Word for Windows) for prompt dispatch to the reviewers. A conventional font of the software should be used (e.g., Times New Roman 12).

The following organization of works is recommended.

TITLE PAGE:

It should include the title of the work, the full name, academic titles, positions of the authors, and the name of the scientific center from which the work originates, the address of the main author, and the telephone number, fax, and email address.

ABSTRACT:

Reviews and case presentations should be accompanied by an abstract on a separate page, not exceeding 250 words. Mention the purpose of the work, the method, findings, and key conclusions.

STRUCTURED ABSTRACT:

Research papers should be accompanied by a structured abstract, not exceeding 250 words. See: Br. J Orthod 1999;26.

PURPOSE:

The abstract should begin with a brief statement about the reason for conducting the study. There should be a connection between the results and the purpose.

STUDY DESIGN:

Describe the type of study (e.g., "double-blind trial", "prospective randomized control trial", "retrospective analysis").

TIME AND PLACE OF ACTION:

Description of each intervention or therapy examined.

SUBJECTS (MATERIALS) AND METHOD:

How the sample was selected and from which population.

INTERVENTIONS:

Description of each intervention or therapy examined.

PRIMARY MEASUREMENTS:

The measurement system or method by which patients are assessed.

RESULTS:

The main results should be presented, including the number, gender, and age of the individuals evaluated along with an explanation of the reason for non-selection or removal from the sample. Numerical results should be described with the mean and its standard deviation for normally distributed data and with the median for asymmetrically distributed data. The 95% confidence interval should be mentioned, as well as the level of significance of the differences. If the differences in the main measurements of the results between two (or more) groups are not statistically significant, the confidence interval for the difference (95%) should be mentioned, as well as any other clinical conclusion.

CONCLUSION(S):

Only conclusions supported by the data should be mentioned. The limitations of the study, as well as possible clinical complications, should be emphasized.

KEYWORDS:

Mention 3 – 5 keywords (words or phrases in alphabetical order) to facilitate the classification of the work.

RUNNING TITLE:

Mention the running title of your work in up to 6 words.

MAIN PART:

The main work consists of the Introduction, Materials and Methods, Findings, Discussion, and Conclusions. In the text, bibliographic references should be written mentioning the author's name and the year of publication and not with a numerical reference. The names of up to two authors should be written in full followed by the year of publication of the work in parentheses, e.g., Burstone and Koenig (1975), or (Burstone and Koenig, 1975). In case the work comes from more than two authors, the name of the first author should be written followed by the abbreviation et al., e.g., Johnston et al. (1982). Multiple references are separated by the Greek question mark punctuation, e.g., (Burstone, 1975; Ricketts, 1970).

BIBLIOGRAPHY:

Bibliographic references should be submitted on a separate page in alphabetical order. The bibliographic references are common for the Greek and English text. For this reason, they must be written in English, even if they refer to the Greek bibliography. All references mentioned in the text must be included in the bibliography list and vice versa. The format of the references should follow the guidelines set out in the "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals" (Vancouver system) (JAMA 1993;269:2282-6). The names of the journals should be written according to the abbreviations of the Cumulated Index Medicus.

EXAMPLES:

JOURNAL ARTICLE:

Burstone CJ, Koenig HA. Force systems from an ideal arch. Am J Orthod 1974;65:270-89.

BOOK CHAPTER:

If more than one work of the same author is mentioned, which were published in the same year, then a small letter of the English language (a, b, c, …) is added successively after the year of publication. The same letter must be added at the points where this work is mentioned in the main part. After the bibliography list, write the name and the complete postal and email address of the author from whom the readers can request reprints.

IMAGES – TABLES:

Photographs and diagrams are referred to in the text as images (e.g., Fig. 1). Each image should be accompanied by a title. The titles of the images should be written on a separate page. Each table should also be written on a separate page along with its title. If an image or table has been previously published, you must send a copy of the license for use (permission to print) from the copyright owner (copywrite owner), and the title must mention the relevant bibliographic reference, e.g., (From: Pedersen et al. (1991), with permission from Oxford University Press).

PHOTOGRAPHS – DIAGRAMS:

Photographs and diagrams must be of high quality. The publication of color photographs requires the consent of the editor and may financially burden the author.

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION OF PHOTOGRAPHS AND DIAGRAMS:

Photographs and diagrams should be submitted in electronic form, each in separate files which should be named accordingly (e.g., figure 01.tif). All photographs should be in TIFF format and have sufficient resolution to achieve high-resolution printing. They should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief by email and be readable by a computer with the Windows operating system. All images should be at least 5 inches (12.7cm) wide and have a resolution of at least 300 DPI. Diagrams (black and white or color) should have a resolution of at least 1200 DPI.

SOFTWARE FOR GRAPHICS:

For the creation of photographs and diagrams, software such as Photoshop and Illustrator should be used. Photographs and diagrams in Word format or PowerPoint presentation format, Corel Draw, or Harvard Graphics do not have sufficient resolution and cannot be used for publication.

ETHICAL PRINCIPLES AND ETHICS:

Researches involving humans should state whether the procedure followed was in accordance with the ethical and moral rules set by the relevant university or state committee, as well as with the Helsinki Declaration as it was formulated in 1983. Researches involving experimental animals must state whether the living conditions of the experimental animals were in accordance with the guidelines of the relevant university or state committee.

PATIENT STATEMENTS:

Written consent must be obtained from the patient or the legal guardian when details or photographs of an individual are to be published through which they could be recognized. A copy of the consent should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief with the submission of the work.

STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL INTEREST:

Authors should declare any potential financial interest in the subject of the work, as well as any future benefit arising from the application of the described technical method, device, or procedure.
